The year about to wane December 28, 2008

Almost end of the year, and here I am trying to recollect whatever is left of the year that would soon become “the year that was.”

In retrospect, I became a full-pledged (did I spell it right?) Netizen after hooking up with SmartBro. Now, I browse the cyberspace like a pro, hehe!

The year also saw me walking the Diliman campus in my attempt to cross enroll in the College of MassCom’s ComRes Department. It was an overwhelming experience. There I met hardcore quali practitioners as classmates and an “intense” professor who both led me to the reality that research, in the communication lens, is now a post-positivist phenomenon.

Our Theory Construction class, on the other hand, brought us to the forefront of a culture and heritage about to vanish in the face of post-modernity (both as an inevitable force and a natural direction the folks lead as a feasible option). Batad may simply be a case, but it, too, became an eye-opener or a wake-up call or reality check for us, social constructivists.

At my own workplace, fate surprised me with my sudden transfer from the Languages|Comm area to a research admin post. That left me with a minimal teaching load and more time to dwell in an office work that makes me reprise the kind of role I did play eight years ago.

On a personal note, the year gifted me with newer (or re-discovered) online friends (Friendster, FaceBook, Multiply, Flickr) who made me wade through old faces as far back as Canossa classmates and UPLB DevCom undergrad blockmates and former students of long time ago (both from Liceo de Bay and Letran-Calamba).

Also, got real one of my wishes: a study cum mini-office|library at home where I now spend most of my time (till wee hours of midnight) bringing ideas, creativity, arts, angst, and a lot more to life.

Overall, it was a bright, innovative, revealing year, which oftentimes surprised me but, in the end, made me real and capable of understanding  myself better.

Been a tough, fun, happy week! The joy provided by people I have the pleasure of calling friends and family was reason enough to perk me up this season of real jubilation and hope. Certain gifts, whether visible or invisible, concerete or abstract, are sure win.

  1. The three gifts I received from Ma’am Dulz the last two weeks: chocolate cookies wrapped in Christmas tree package; meaningful display ceramics bearing the tag “if men are from Mars…”; and the blueberry wine she gave me yesterday during the culmination of our kris kringle.
  2. The fun and the laughter from yesterday’s intimate Christmas party among people from my closest circles of friends at Letran. The foods and the stories warmed up that celebration of friendship and joy of staying where we found our real calling.
  3. The very useful key chain I got from Dean Au containing a handy, cute flashlight and a whistle which  see me through my dark descent from the stairs of our office to my writing class every MWF night.
  4. Fruit package from Nursing Dean Conde. What was nice about the entire basket of fruits was the fact that the bunches of bananas and papaya were organically raised. It took some time before they got ripe, but, boy, the taste was so sweet and unadulterated–something you won’t get from commercially sold fruits.
  5. The gift of a reactivated wordpress site. Moreso now that blogging at Friendster gets real slow and unstable.
  6. The happiness of fixing one’s new office with the support of concerned folks.
  7. The awe of visiting a nearby plant nursery and seeing Christmas fully red and abloomed. What a joyful sight!091220086791
  8. The excitement to drop by 7-11 convenience store so I could buy Real  Living mag, and the eventual high flipping through its pages.

I hope the list expands to other worthwhile presents as December marches on and the new year beckons. Always, cheers! :)

Been a tiring week so far.

Tuesday saw me attending STCIERD 5th Joint RTWG Meeting at DOST Regional Office in Los Banos.  After 15 years, I was back where I’ve started: at PCARRD compound attending a research meeting. It’s a seemingly endless, vicious cycle. I remember PCARRD…

Wednesday was exciting. I had the time of my life fixing my new office with the help of my able staff. That saw me buying indoor plants and clay pots at Bucal plant nursery with our maintenance personnel Sam. MM, Ria, and Oya helped me design the new arrangement of my desk. Sam helped us do the menial, leg-work part. We released one of the sofa sets, put it outside my office to make it occupy our new waiting area. Then we let the round table come in as a new fixture inside my room. Overall effect: a homey ambiance. The book shelf which used to occupy back of my desk now forms part of the round-table area like a reading room or mini-library. The green plants provide newer-life kind of atmosphere. I had to bring this morning one small plant from our front yard to be a centerpiece for the round table. Now, it’s nice and inspiring to work with and in a new working space or environ. Enough said.

Tomorrow is another exciting day despite the rains. I’ll keep you posted.
